Letter to New Owners - Peter & Betsy

Dear Peter and Betsy,

I want to give you some quick feedback on our recently completed adventure on the Rogue River, May 28-31, 2011. Words cannot adequately describe our experience, but suffice to say, this trip could not have been better. My wife and I signed up because we had such an amazing time last year on the same trip with Bob Meister and his two guides, Kevin Hawkins and Ray Hughey. We had some misgivings when we learned from Joy that she and Bob sold the business. It was hard for us to imagine a new outfitter leading groups down the Rogue without the benefit of Whitewater's 27 years learning all the little things that make the big differences. We produced a 1-hour movie of our trip last year, entitled "Four Days on the Rogue" and screened it last September for Bob and Joy and our fellow hikers. At the time, many in our group talked about wanting to relive the experience and sign up again this year, but Caron and I were the only ones from last year's group to do so. I decided to do a lot less filming this year and just enjoy the hike without the pressure of capturing the footage necessary for a movie. This year I shot a little video, took a few photographs, and may make a short movie of our trip if time permits, but we have deep and enduring memories that are etched into our brains and our hearts, thanks to the three young men you are being represented by on the Rogue: Tom Scarborough, James Sampsel and Michael Vargas-Williams.

First, let me tell you that ROW is being positioned as the premier outfitter on the Rogue, thanks to the leadership, integrity and demeanor of Tom, James and Michael. Tom's leadership and experience shone brightly from the moment we met him until the last wave goodbye. In James and Michael we found two young men who have unique and compelling life stories. We are blessed and honored that they shared their stories with us. Doing so was a game-changer. The connections between guests and guides opened up and deepened throughout the journey as we shared life experiences. Tom, James and Michael were absolutely perfect in the authentic, honest and open way they engaged with each member of the group. They always seemed to be there when they were needed, say and do the right things at the right times, and above all, taught and lived Row's mission and values by striving for excellence, having meaningful interactions with guests, being supremely respectful, modeling healthy behavior, having fun, sharing laughter, and putting safety before ego.

When Joy told me about the sale of Whitewater, she assured me that the new owners had values similar to those that made Bob and Joy such a legend in our community and on the Rogue. I was skeptical but hopeful. Having now experienced ROW Adventures I can tell others that what Bob and Joy worked so hard to build is in very good hands and as long as people like Tom Scarborough, James Sampsel and Michael Vargas-Williams are representing you, I'm sure you will have tremendous success.

Please let your team on the Rogue River know that they have exceeded our expectations, and that my wife and I are honored to know them and invite each of them to stay connected with us. No doubt this will be a long and challenging summer for you as you build your business of rafting on the Rogue. I can't imagine it being in better hands. I wish you well.

To Tom, James and Michael---The work you do transforms lives. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Paul and Caron Klopping
