Hiking the Historic Oregon Rogue River Trail

White Water Warehouse offers multi-day lodge to lodge treks, that feature stories of the dueling gold miners, Indian wars and feuding neighbors.

Hiking Oregon’s Rogue River trail with White Water Warehouse owner and trail guide, Bob Meister, is more than a trek; it is a history lesson. The 43-mile hike lasts for 4 days and 3 nights and winds through some of southern Oregon’s richest backcountry historical and ecological sites. “The Rogue River-Siskiyou mountain range hike is not only stunningly beautiful but also home to some incredible moments in history. Hikers have a chance to live history by standing on sites where local Indian battles took place, they will discover the ruins of homes where neighbors shot and killed each other over gold mining claims, and even walk through old homesteads where home owners would spend winter months snowed-in waiting for food and rations to arrive by wagons coming over the mountains.” says Meister. Even the start of the Rogue River trail is historic. The trailhead is named Grave Creek after the grave of Martha Leland Crowley, a daughter of a pioneer couple. Martha was buried under an oak tree near the creek in 1846.

Hiking Trip Testimonials

Hiking the Rogue River canyon is like no other hiking experience. There are very, very few places in the United States that offer a 4-day hike coupled with stays in comfortable lodges along the way. We hosted 5 hiking groups in 2008 and look forward to adding a few more hiking trips in 2009. Our limit is 15 hikers per trip so don't delay in checking with our office staff on availabilities in 2009. See below a few select emails/photos that our 2008 hiking guests shared with us upon their return from this one-of-a-kind adventure.

Glenna, hiking along the Rogue

Glenna from northern California emailed us about her early June Rogue River hiking experience with WWW....

I was part of the June 8 Rogue River hiking trip and must tell you that I enjoyed myself thoroughly. The scenery was beautiful, the food and lodging wonderful, the group very enjoyable, and Bob and John were the perfect guides. After the hike, I spent another week exploring Oregon from the McKenzie River area, the Willamette Valley, the Silverton flower farms, as far north as Portland. Thanks so much for your part in making my Oregon visit a great experience.

Sue traveled with WWW on an early June hiking trip. She emailed us about her Rogue River hiking experience and she also included in the email comments to her new good friends that she met on this hiking adventure....

Hi everyone. I had the most incredible time with all of you. It seems that all the stars aligned...good people, good weather, good food, and a great place to hike!! This will be an experience I will always remember.

Hiking Couple

Jackie from California just arrived back home after experiencing our first-class Rogue River hiking/lodge trip starting on June 1 of this year. Here's what our new friend had to say about the Rogue River hiking adventure....

Hi Joy,
We just got back from Oregon this afternoon and I wanted to tell you what a great trip it was! Honestly, I don't think I've had a better time in ages! All the friends from down here loved it and Sue, her sister-in-law Nadine and I have decided that your husband Bob is the best guide ever!! He's got such a great gentle way of dealing with people and we thought he was wonderful.

Thanks so much for encouraging me to hang in there. Even with just getting over the illness it was very manageable. We questioned the term "moderate" at first and finally admitted to Bob we had just over exerted the first day and once we got adjusted it was a perfect combination of small challenges with lots of easy. Of course, for me, riding on the raft for six miles the second day helped!!

Thanks again and if this bunch down here gets organized . . . we'll have a meeting to discuss maybe doing it again next year. I'll be in touch if and when that happens.

Thanks again,
Jackie

White Water Warehouse offers an alternative view of the Wild and Scenic Rogue River Canyon: guided hiking on the Rogue River trail. You get the best of both worlds; trekking through one of the nation’s finest river canyons and enjoying the comfort of wilderness lodges each evening.

Our trips are designed for our hikers to experience the hike in the most comfortable and safest manner possible. A WWW trail guide leads the hike each day (often, it is our WWW President, Bob Meister). Our trail guides are very knowledgeable about the Rogue’s flora and fauna. The trail guide will also point out historic sites along the way and give hikers a broad perspective of the Rogue’s interesting past.

Another reason why we offer a trail guide is for the safety of our hikers. For example, a hiker might get a pesky blister which makes it uncomfortable to continue the hike for that day. Because we also offer a raft guide on the river to carry our hikers’ gear, our trail guide will contact the raft guide by walkie-talkie and let him know the injured hiker (or tired hiker) needs to ride along in the raft for the remainder of the day. Another advantage to raft support is that you won’t be carrying heavy packs during the hike—that all goes down river with the raft.

Wonderful, organic lunches are prepared riverside by WWW’s raft support guide. Each day at lunch time, our hikers meander down the trail to the banks of the Rogue to be greeted by a fabulous lunch of organic fruits, vegetables and mouth-watering treats.

On your WWW hiking trip you will also enjoy Oregon smoked salmon/cheeses and crackers before dinner each night. And, since we are so proud of  Oregon & Washington wines, we offer modest amounts of wine during dinner for our guests to enjoy and sample. You are welcome to bring your own beverages as well.

The hike itself offers an excellent scenic hiking experience as the trail meanders through forests, open meadows, and dramatic viewpoints along rocky crags. Black bear, osprey, bald eagles, and wild flowers can be seen throughout the canyon during your hike. The wild and scenic section of the Rogue was one of the first river canyons brought under protection by the national wild and scenic rivers act. And, therefore, this hiking trip offers excellent photographic opportunities.

Most of the Rogue River trail is well constructed with moderate grades. But, once again, the advantage to having your own personal trail guide comes into play when you want to determine how far you are from lunch or the next lodge. You need to be in good shape to walk this trail since there are several places where the trail has steep elevation changes.

The average hiker takes 4 days to trek over the Rogue’s scenic 40-mile trail. White Water Warehouse starts all hikes at Graves Creek (although you will meet as a group on the morning of the hike at Galice Resort and then we will shuttle you down to Graves Creek)  which has an elevation of 689 feet. At the end of the trail, a place known as Foster Bar, the trail’s elevation is 474 feet. However, don’t let this factoid fool you…there are several spots where the trail makes steep elevation changes.

Here are the miles per day that you will hike with us:

First day:        9.6 miles to Black Bar Lodge
Second day:    14.7 miles to Marial Lodge
Third day:       8.9 miles to Clayhill Lodge
Fourth day:     7.8 miles to Foster Bar take-out

Our guides are intimately familiar with the trail, the river, its canyon, plants, animals, geology and human history. Again, lunch and your extra equipment are carried on our raft…so no heavy backpacks to worry about. You simply carry your daily gear, water bottle, or camelback in a small day pack of your choosing.

The Rogue River canyon hiking adventure is little known…but that is to your advantage. You will probably never meet another party during your wilderness trek with White Water Warehouse. What you will see are beautiful wildflowers and plenty of breath-taking scenery and wildlife.

The only months that WWW recommends taking this hike are in May or June since after that time the canyon heats up to uncomfortable levels for hiking.
